SEARS OFFERS NEW PHONEPLAN

Sears Canada has introduced a new long-distance program that is available to all Sears Card holders. Called Sears PhonePlan, it provides 25% off every long-distance call in Canada, the U.S. and overseas. The Sears discount is added on to any regular discounts provided by the local phone company. "Sears can offer these discounts because we buy a massive amount of long-distance and we get a volume discount, which we're using to pass along to our customers," Sears president Don Shaffer says in a release. All long-distance calls are billed to the customer's monthly Sears credit card statement. The PhonePlan discounts apply anywhere in Canada, except in Saskatchewan, Edmonton and a few other small communities. Sears officials were unavailable to comment on whether the retailer will advertise the new service. Sears' advertising is handled by Prism Communications of Toronto.
