NEW TRENDS IN GROCERY AND DRUG STORES
By Adnews Staff
Grocery and drug stores are growing in new directions according to a survey by A.C. Nielsen of Markham, Ont. It shows that the growth of grocery store products has remained high at 5% for two years straight. Drug stores, however, are experiencing a 5% decline in growth for health and beauty products over the past 12 months, and overall have faced a volume decline of 2% during January and February of 1995. Snack products lead the growth for grocery stores, with frozen foods and dairy products close behind. Drug stores did achieve growth with health/home diagnostics products, the result of an aging population. The information was gathered from 7,200 Canadian HomeScan families, 92% of which shop at grocery stores. Drug stores were the second most popular channel with 89% of families surveyed indicated they shop there.
