McDonald's readies MacCoin promotion

McDonald's Restaurants of Canada is preparing a promotion called "MacCoin" tied to the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac sandwich. McDonald's will conduct the international promotion in 50 countries beginning on Aug. 2. During the initiative, the chain will distribute what it describes as "the first fully food-backed global currency." Each MacCoin can be redeemed for a Big Mac at participating restaurants internationally. In Canada, 50,000 of the coins will be distributed through a Twitter-based contest as well as through local radio giveaways. Approximately six million coins will be distributed worldwide.

"As one of the most well-known and iconic McDonald's menu items around the globe and in Canada, the Big Mac deserves the celebration that the coin evokes," said Jeff McLean, chief financial officer at McDonald's Canada. "The fact that in 50 years, the Big Mac has become so universally recognized it's used to measure the purchasing power of international currencies is pretty remarkable."
