Study: Global television viewing habits

Swedish technology company Ericsson has released its annual Ericsson ConsumerLab TV & Media Report for 2015. The study examines the opinions and habits of television consumers globally.

According to the report, the availability of video-on-demand services has allowed consumers to change their television viewing habits. The amount of time spent watching streaming or downloaded video has doubled since 2011 to six hours per week, representing 35% of all viewing.

The report also finds that 61% of consumers watch video on a mobile device, a 71% increase since 2012. Among teenagers, approximately 66% of video viewing is done on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

User-generated content is attracting an increasing number of viewers, according to the report. Ten percent of respondents said they watch video on YouTube for more than three hours per day, while 33% said it was "very important" to be able to watch such content on their television sets.

In addition, 87% of subscribers to video-on-demand services reported watching multiple episodes of a television series in a row at least once per week.

Half of respondents said they have difficulty finding anything to watch on traditional linear television on a daily basis, due to a lack of recommendation features. However, linear television remains popular for "premium viewing" and live events such as sports. The TV set also remains a family gathering spot.

"The continued rise of streamed video-on-demand and UGC services reflects the importance of three specific factors to today's viewers," said Anders Erlandsson, a senior advisor at Ericsson ConsumerLab. "Great content, flexibility, and a high-quality overall experience. Innovative business models that support these three areas are now crucial to creating TV and video offerings that are both relevant and attractive."

The report is based on interviews with 22,500 people in Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK, Ukraine and the US.
