Insurance Bureau of Canada begins earthquake awareness effort

The Insurance Bureau of Canada will conduct an initiative in British Columbia this week intended to raise awareness of the importance of earthquake preparedness. From May 4 to May 9, a portable earthquake simulator called the "Quake Cottage" will visit a series of community events in the province. The goal is to inform residents of the area that there is a 30% chance that a major earthquake will strike southwestern British Columbia in the next 50 years. The effort is being undertaken in association with the Province of British Columbia, eight municipal governments in the Greater Vancouver Area and FortisBC.

"Preparing Canada for an earthquake is a strategic priority for Canada's insurance industry," said Bill Adams, western and Pacific vice-president at the Insurance Bureau of Canada. "We are pleased to be helping create a culture of earthquake preparedness here in British Columbia. Preparing for an earthquake is a shared responsibility, and IBC is pleased to be working with governments and other partners to help ensure that British Columbians are prepared, both physically and financially."
