SONY RELEASES DIGITAL RECORDER

Sony of Canada Ltd. launched a portable chip recorder last week that allows users to record up to 16 minutes of messages. Called the ICD-50, the device stores data digitally on an integrated circuit chip, rather than tape. It was released two weeks ago in the U.S. The recorder's chip can be erased and used again with no effect on the sound quality of later recordings. The unit is capable of playing up to 6.5 hours, or recording up to 5.5 hours on one "AAA" battery. Messages can be stored in one of two separate message files, allowing users to organize information by category, such as "business" or "personal," and all recordings are date and time stamped. Up to 99 messages can be recorded in each of the two files before the chip is full. Print ads to promote the recorder were produced in-house. They will be available to individual dealers who wish to run them in newspapers or flyers in local markets. Cohn & Wolfe of Toronto is handling public relations for the product.
