CRTC begins Let's Talk TV program

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has begun a program intended to solicit comments from the public about the future of the television system in Canada. Called "Let's Talk TV: A Conversation with Canadians," the program invites consumers to share what they think about what appears on television, how they receive television programming and the amount of information needed to make informed choices about television. Consumers can participate in online discussions at <http://www.crtc.gc.ca/talktv>. They can also submit comments by email, telephone, fax or mail. Comments will be accepted until Nov. 22. The CRTC is also encouraging Canadians to host volunteer events at which participants can discuss these issues. Organizers can submit reports of these discussions to the commission until Jan. 10, 2014.

"Let's Talk TV is an opportunity for all Canadians to tell us what they think of their television system and how they would like to see it changed," said Jean-Pierre Blais, chairman of the CRTC. "We want to ensure that Canada's TV system speaks to the current and future needs of Canadians as engaged citizens, as consumers that make informed choices about programming, and as creators of exceptional content. The comments we receive from Canadians will help set the stage for the formal public proceeding that will get underway next year."

The CRTC is conducting this public comment program in advance of a formal review of the television system it will undertake in the spring of 2014. That review will include a public hearing component that will take place in September 2014.
