Toronto Star readies augmented reality issue

The Toronto Star, in association with Nissan Canada, will publish a special issue on Sept. 19 featuring extensive augmented reality elements. The issue will include approximately 30 pages of editorial and 30 advertisements with various forms of interactivity such as video, audible speech and animation. Readers can use a smartphone or tablet equipped with an application called Layar to view this additional material by aiming the device's camera at the paper. Enhanced material will appear on the front page of each section of the paper, as well as on inside pages. One page will call a live stream of the new Ripley's Aquarium. Users can visit <http://www.thestar.com/gobeyond> to download the application and enter a contest for a $3,000 travel voucher.

"Partnering with agencies and clients like Nissan Canada provides an opportunity to create an entirely new experience for readers," said Sandy Muir, vice-president of advertising at the Star. "More than 30 advertisements will be Layar enabled, allowing readers to connect with brands in an exciting and fun way."
