Supreme Court finds advertising a right of free expression
By Adnews Staff
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled in favour of the Canadian Federation of Students-BC and the BC Teachers' Federation in their suit against the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority. The court unanimously found the right to advertise on public transit is a freedom of expression right protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In 2005, the transit authority rejected ads from the two organizations in the months leading up to the provincial election. "This decision ensures the public's right to use public media to create dialogue on the issues that impact our lives, from tuition fees, to the minimum wage, to the environment," said Shamus Reid, chairperson of the student federation.
