CBC Sports begins Hockey Anthem Challenge

CBC Sports has begun a contest to find a new theme song for its Hockey Night In Canada program. Entrants can submit their songs until Aug. 31. These submissions will be posted online at <http://www.cbcsports.com/anthemchallenge> to be reviewed and rated by the public. Five or more semi-finalists will be presented on a television special on Oct. 4. A panel of celebrity judges will provide opinions, followed by another round of public voting. Two finalists will be featured during the Hockey Night In Canada broadcast the next week, when viewers will vote for the winner. The new theme song will be announced on Oct. 11. The winner will receive $100,000 plus half of the ongoing performance royalties. The other half will be donated to Canadian minor league hockey. "Between now and October, we invite musicians to create and everyone in the country to help us select the perfect new music to represent the most famous hockey broadcast in the world," said Scott Moore, executive director of CBC Sports. "We think the next couple of months are going to be right up there with the playoffs in terms of excitement, passion, debate and controversy. Canadians have never been shy about anything to do with hockey. This is going to be an event where hockey history is made."
