African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario readies campaign

The Toronto-based African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario will break a new public awareness campaign on June 8. Produced by Top Drawer Creative and LH Metropolis Communications, the campaign will promote testing and safer sex to members of the African- and Caribbean-Canadian communities in Ontario. The campaign will also seek to reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The campaign is intended to foster a sense of grassroots involvement, according to Top Drawer. The creative will make use of photographs of volunteer models in billboards, bus shelter, print and online advertising. LH Metropolis will support the advertising with a media relations campaign in the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, St. Catherines, Windsor and Sudbury. The campaign will run through the summer. “This campaign will encourage greater awareness in African and Caribbean communities in Ontario that HIV/AIDS is an issue we can’t ignore,” said Winston Husbands, co-chair of the council. “We understand why our communities have been reluctant to address HIV in the past. But now is the time to get tested, practice safer sex and fight against stigma. When we take care of ourselves as individuals, we also show a commitment to our communities. This is essential to our struggle for healthy and prosperous communities.”
