COMPAQ SALES SOAR
By Adnews Staff
Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, Texas has reported a 42% increase in sales for the quarter ending March 31. In Canada, Compaq's first-quarter revenues grew 30% over the same quarter in 1995, and unit shipments increased 17%. While it leads in overall personal computer sales worldwide, the company lags behind two others in the portable market, Toshiba Corp. and International Business Machines. With the intention of moving up in the portable rankings, Compaq is introducing a new line of mid-priced portables in the U.S. in the summer. Officials at Compaq wouldn't comment yesterday on when or if the new computers would come to Canada. The computer maker hired former Toshiba executive Michael Winkler last November to head up Compaq's portable division. Winkler told The Wall Street Journal that Compaq plans a much more extensive portable roll-out next year.
