SOFT DRINKS HOLD TOP SPOT

Canadians spent about 7% more on the 20 top selling grocery items over the past year, according to A.C. Nielsen of Markham Ont. Coffee was the leader of the pack with a 38% increase in dollar growth. Yogurt came in a distant second with a 14% jump and frozen dinners third at 13%. Prepackaged cheese and bathroom tissues tied at 12%, while dollar growth for ready-to-serve juices and drinks increased 11%. Both eggs and margarine showed a 9% jump. Although soft drinks had no dollar growth, they were still the top selling product in grocery stores, with total sales of $1.5 billion. Milk is number two, followed by ready-to-eat cereals.
