LEARNING TO HANDLE FOOD

Thirty-eight per cent of Canadians have difficulty reading safety tips on labels, according to Statistics Canada. This is why the Montreal-based Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors decided to use radio for a public service campaign launched this month, focusing on sanitary food handling. Each 30-second spot features a common domestic situation involving the preparation or serving of food and provides tips to reduce the risk of illness from bacterial contamination. They are seasonally adjusted so that listeners will hear about Easter eggs in spring and summer situtations in July. Registered public health inspector Sally de la Rue Browne wrote the spots and is the commentator. She is known in Western Canada for her nutrition-based radio, TV and conference appearances, as well as her articles in food industry and consumer magazines.
