APPLE TOPS LIST

Apple Computer Inc. of Cupertino, California was the No. 1 U.S. seller of personal computers in the third quarter, according to two U.S. surveys. Apple had just over 13% of the market according to Dataquest Inc. and International Data Corp. This is a big comeback for Apple, whose market share fell to 8% before its latest Power Macintosh machines were released this year. It was able to jump ahead even though it was struggling with a shortage of supplies, a delay in products, a corporate shake-up and speculation that it would be sold. It was a close race for second place between Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp. and Packard Bell. IDC put Packard Bell in the No. 2 spot with 12.4% of the market, followed by Compaq at 11.7%. Dataquest ranked Compaq second with 12.1% and Packard Bell at 11.8%. Both surveys said International Business Machines Corp. and Hewlett Packard rounded out the top five.
