1997 PROVES TO BE A GOOD YEAR FOR ADVERTISING

Canadian advertising spending boomed last year with daily newspapers leading the way in ad spending. Total advertising spending for the year grew 8.5% to $8,815 million. This compares to a 5.6% growth in 1996. Ad spending in daily newspapers jumped 17.5% to $2.3 billion, giving newspapers a 26% share of total spending. Ad spending in the outdoor medium grew 10%, while spending in consumer magazines grew 9.2%. TV spending rose 6.3%, giving the medium a 23.8% share, while radio spending was up 7.2%, giving radio a 9.6% share. Combined broadcast dollars hit $2,948 million, with TV at $2,099 million and radio at $849 million. National advertising was dominated by broadcast at $1,902 million, while local broadcast spending was $1,047 million.
