INTERNET CAN CAUSE HAVOC TO COMPANY SECURITY

Over half of Canadian information technology executives say the risks to company information have increased and is getting worse because of the Internet, according to a study done by Ernst & Young. Attacks via the Internet have doubled from 4% in 1997 to 8% in 1998. Of the Internet-related breaches, 57% were due to mischief or vandalism. The survey showed that 70% of Canadian participants suffer some form of monetary loss due to security breach. Thirty-four incidents cost companies $1 million(US) or more. The biggest security issues are network security, top management commitment and overall security architecture. Ernst & Young conducts this survey annually to assess the effectiveness of current information technology security systems. The study surveyed 4,249 information technology executives representing a range of industries from around the world.
