MORE U.S. TRAVELERS FLOCK TO CANADA

More overnight U.S. travelers crossed the border into Canada during January 1998, according to statistics by the Canadian Tourism Information Network. U.S. visitation increased 9.2% over the same month last year, while overnight auto travel from the U.S. jumped 12.8%. Non-auto entries, which is primarily plane travel, increased by 4.3%. Overseas visitation decreased by 3.6% during January. The biggest drop was in visitors from South Korea, followed by Japan, then Germany. The number of Canadians traveling out of the country was up 2.6%, but less are going to the U.S. Compared to a year ago, same day trips by Canadian residents to the U.S. by car declined 13.1%. Same day automobile travel from the U.S. to Canada increased 14.6%.
