IBM OFFERS SERVERS TO EXPLOIT THE WEB
By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based International Business Machines Corp. has introduced a new family of AS/400 servers that are backed by thousands of new Web applications designed to help small and medium-sized businesses take advantage of business opportunities on the Internet. Called the AS/400e series, the machines give customers Internet security and allows them to take advantage of such technologies as Java, Lotus Domino and ActiveX. The computers have been enriched with the integration of a firewall solution on a separate processor card which eliminates the need for customers to buy a total separate server to act as a firewall. Enhancements to the operating system include Internet User and Validation List access control, as well as System User access control. This gives users the ability to extend access to system applications into the extranet or Internet environments, with the added security to validate non-company user authorization to selected programs. The machines also have expanded storage and memory. In Canada, IBM is doing a cross-Canada tour to promote the AS/400e series of computers. The tour and the computers will be promoted in print and radio ads created by Ogilvy & Mather of Toronto. Goodman Communications of Toronto is doing PR.
