AGREEMENT OPENS WORLD TELECOM MARKETS

Telecommunications firms will be able to reach out and touch more people after the signing of a global agreement over the weekend. The pact, signed by 68 countries including Canada, forces countries to open up their telecommunications markets to foreign companies. Under the pact, any disagreements will be bound by a dispute-settlement mechanism governed by the World Trade Organization. Ownership restrictions in telecommunications firms operating in Canada will be maintained. Under Canada's ownership rules, no telecommunications firm can operate in Canada if more than 46.7% of it is controlled by foreign interests.
