DISCOUNT STORES MORE POPULAR IN THAILAND

Discount superstores are growing in Thailand. Their retail space has grown 30% over the past year, while retail space for department stores and supermarkets has grown only 15%. Discount stores sell products to low- and middle-income earners who comprise over 50% of the population in Thailand. Department stores sell brand-name and luxury goods to middle- and high-income consumers who make up only 20% of the population. Major discount store operator Big C expects sales of $400 million(US) this year, up form $200 million in 1995
