Accessible Media readies open described video channel

Accessible Media of Montreal will launch a new television service called AMI-télé on Dec. 16. The French-language channel will present its entire schedule with open described video. It is primarily aimed at consumers who are blind or partially-sighted. The programming will also include closed captioning for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. AMI-télé will carry general local and international programming, including series, films, children's shows and public affairs programs, as well as original content. It will be available as part of the basic digital TV package offered by cable, IPTV and satellite direct-to-home services nationally.

"For people who are blind or partially sighted, television is a vital information tool and an ideal source of entertainment," said Philippe Lapointe, vice-president of programming and production for the channel. "For these reasons, AMI-télé will become an important means of inclusion for them and their families. The UDA, producers, major networks, everyone has been very generous and welcomed the arrival of AMI-télé enthusiastically. Thanks to these partners, AMI-télé will offer rich and varied programming."
