CAMPAIGN TO STOP ILLEGAL CIGARETTE SALES
By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Coalition for Responsible Tobacco Retailing is trying to encourage retailers to ensure they don't sell cigarettes to anyone under 18 years-of-age. The organization launched a national point-of-purchase campaign this week called Operation I.D. The in-store signs tell minors that store operators will ask them for proof of age if they are trying to buy cigarettes. The coalition has also mailed materials to store owners to help them train their employees how to implement a firm policy on illegal tobacco sales. The in-store materials were created by Blitz Direct & Promotion's Quebec City office. Coalition members include the Retail Council of Canada, the Canadian Association of Independent Grocers, the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council and the National Association of Tobacco and Confectionery Distributors.
