CRTC mandates distribution of national news channels

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has issued a new order requiring television distribution companies to offer their customers all Category C national news specialty channels. These include CBC News Network, CTV News Channel, Le Canal Nouvelles, Le Réseau de l’information and Sun News Network. The order stipulates that these channels must be offered in a bundle and individually to subscribers by May 20, 2014 at the latest.

"Canadian news services are an important part of our democracy," said Jean-Pierre Blais, chairman of the CRTC. "With the rules we are announcing today, Canadians, as citizens, will have access to the news services that are of interest to them and will therefore have an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of opinions on matters of public concern."
