Torstar Digital, Rogers Media form online content management joint venture

Toronto-based Torstar Digital and Rogers Media have begun a joint venture in support of a system call the Total Online Publishing Solution, a high-volume content management system for Internet-based publishers. Established in 2005, the TOPS system is intended to allow publishers to operate digital properties with large amounts of content and traffic. TOPS has been running TheStar.com for four years and Toronto.com for five years. TOPS also runs the news sites of Metroland Media Group and Metro News of Canada. The joint venture takes the form of an equal partnership under which Rogers and Torstar will manage and develop the system under a management services agreement. "We have been working with the TOPS platform for a year to great success," said Claude Galipeau, general manager of digital media at Rogers Media. "Citytv.com launched on TOPS last fall, as well as Flare.com and our all news radio sites, including 680News.com. TOPS has vastly improved the publishing power of our journalists and editors, our search engine performance and our speed to market. This investment allows Rogers to co-develop a best-of-breed content management platform and accelerate its adoption for our brands."
