Walt Disney of Burbank, CA has acquired Club Penguin of Kelowna, BC, an online site aimed at children. According to the company, Club Penguin has approximately 700,000 subscribers who use the site to chat, participate in group activities and furnish virtual homes with in-game currency. The service is aimed at children aged six to 14. The site will be renamed Disney's Club Penguin, but will retain its current address at <http://www.clubpenguin.com>. Company founders Lane Merrifield, Dave Krysko and Lance Priebe, will join Disney as the senior management of the unit. "This acquisition is consistent with our strategy of leveraging technology to create and deliver high-quality entertainment around the world and our commitment to investing our capital to generate growth and value for our shareholders," said Bob Iger, president and CEO of Disney."Combining the creativity and knowledge of the Club Penguin team with our existing Disney Online assets will help us further achieve our objective of establishing clear leadership in the kids and families online virtual worlds space around the globe."
