Sharp begins carbon footprint contest

Mississauga-based Sharp Electronics of Canada has begun a contest to promote its new Aquos 1080p D82 television set. According to the company, the contest is related to the less environmentally damaging techniques and materials used to produce the sets. Until June 4, Canadians can apply to join the contest online at <http://www.1080pd82.ca>. Eighty of the applicants will be selected at random to participate in the contest. Each participant will be evaluated to determine their current environmental footprint. Each participant will then attempt each week to lower his or her impact. Their progress will be logged through journal entries on the contest website. The contest will continue until Sept. 20, at which time the entrant who has reduced their environmental impact the most will win a 52” Aquos LCD television. Two 46” screens and various other prizes will also be distributed among the contestants. “We’re proud of Sharp’s environmentally-friendly approach to business,” said Carmine Cinerari, vice-president of the consumer products division at Sharp. “Now we’re hoping to encourage everyone to recognize the urgent need for change. We’ve built this challenge around the idea of 10 provinces, 80 people, with 82 Days to make a difference. 1080pD82.ca.”
