PASSAGE: ISRAEL ASPER

Israel Asper, founder and chairman of CanWest Global Communications, died yesterday. A statement from the company said Asper passed away shortly after being admitted to St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg at 9:30 a.m yesterday morning. With him was his wife Babs, his sons David and Leonard and his daughter, Gail. Asper retired from his position as executive chairman of CanWest in January. He remained involved in the company as chairman of the board. In the statement CanWest said a successor would be selected "in due course." According to media reports, Asper was 71 years of age. Funeral arrangements will be announced by his family.
