TORSTAR COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF BLACK PRESS

Toronto-based Torstar has acquired a 19.35% interest in Victoria, BC-based Black Press for $20.6 million. Torstar announced the acquisition plans in September. Black Press publishes 88 newspapers and has 11 printing plants in western Canada, Washington State and Hawaii. The company is owned by David Black, who once worked at Torstar. Black left Torstar in 1975 when he purchased his father's newspaper in Williams Lake, BC. Torstar's businesses include daily newspapers The Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator and The Guelph Mercury, as well as Metroland Printing, Publishing & Distributing and Harlequin Enterprises.
