NEW DRUG FIGHTS OSTEOPOROSIS
By Adnews Staff
Merck Frosst Canada of Montreal launched a drug earlier this month that treats osteoporosis. Called Fosamax, the drug builds healthy bones in patients with the crippling disease. It can reduce the number of spinal fractures by 63%. Print advertising for the drug, from Publicité Anderson in Montreal, will begin in the February issues of medical journals. The drug was launched in the U.S. in October. Menopause is the single largest risk factor for osteoporosis. Women can lose up to 25% of their total bone mass in the first 10 years after menopause because of the drop of estrogen levels. NATIONAL PharmaCom of Toronto is handling PR for the drug.
