PET FOOD STORES ARE GAINING GROUND ON GROCERY STORES
By Adnews Staff
Canadians spend most of their dog and cat food money at grocery stores but the latter are running into increased competition from specialty pet stores, says a release from Nielsen Marketing Research in Markham, Ont. Canadians spent $580 million on dog and cat food in the 12 months ending last June. Sixty-two per cent of dog food and 67.7% of cat food was bought at grocery stores. Pet stores, kennels, vets, food companies and co-ops were the second biggest sellers, with 28.4% of dog food sales and almost 20% of cat food. Warehouse clubs are the third biggest sellers, followed by mass merchandisers, convenience stores and drug stores.
