TELESAT CANADA LAUNCHES FIRST DIRECT BROADCAST SATELLITE
By Adnews Staff
Telesat Canada celebrated the launch of Nimiq, Canada's first direct broadcast satellite last week. When the satellite goes into service in July, Nimiq will be capable of carrying hundreds of direct-to-home satellite channels to Canadian televisions from coast to coast, expanding home entertainment. The primary customer on Telesat's Nimiq will be Bell ExpressVu. Bell ExpressVu will use the satellite to enhance its direct-to-home television service across Canada. Nimiq gives Bell ExpressVu the ability to broadcast to an 18-inch dish and expand its programming line-up. The new satellite, Telesat's twelfth satellite and the first to be launched since the Anik Es in 1991, was manufactured by Lockheed Martin Telecommunications.
