MARKS & SPENCER SHUTS DOWN CANADIAN SUBSIDIARY

Marks & Spencer has announced its subsidiary, Marks & Spencer Canada Inc. of Toronto, will cease to operate during the current financial year. The company had traded as three divisions: Marks & Spencer, D'Allaird's and People's. The People's and D'Allaird's chains were sold in 1992 and 1996. According to the company, the decision to close the Canadian operations forms part of the company's ongoing strategic review of all its business operations. The company has operated in Canada since 1973.
