COUCH POTATOES LIKE THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL

Discovery Channel Canada is number one for viewer satisfaction, according to the Canadian Media Quality Ratings Survey done by Nielsen Media Research of Markham, Ont. Ninety-seven percent of viewers said they were satisfied with Discovery Channel programming and 42% were very satisfied. The Learning Channel and Arts & Entertainment ranked second and third respectively with 40% of viewers being very satisfied with TLC and 38% being very satisfied with A&E. The highest rated conventional broadcaster was CITY TV with a "very satisfied" score of 35%. In terms of awareness, 98% of respondents have heard of the CBC, followed by Discovery at 95%. A&E edged out Discovery in terms of the number of viewers. Seventy-four per cent said they watch Discovery, compared to A&E's 76%. The top five overall channels with a "very satisfied" score are: Discovery, TLC, A&E, The Sports Network and History Television. The survey interviewed 2,750 adults aged 18 and over during the 1998 fall TV season.
