By Adnews Staff
Fundy Communications of Saint John, New Brunswick may jump into the local telephone market next year. The company has filed an application with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to provide local telephone service to consumers and businesses. Fundy is hoping to launch the service in Halifax by mid-1999. Advertising for Fundy is handled by Palmer Jarvis DDB of Vancouver. GCP Strategic Communications of Moncton, NB handles PR. Fundy's other services include TV entertainment, high-speed and dial-up Internet service, paging and long distance services for businesses. Fundy is the latest in what is becoming a line of companies offering local telephone service. Cogeco Cable of Montreal plans to offer the service in Ontario and Quebec by the end of 1999 and MetroNet Communications of Montreal is already offering the service in nine Canadian cities.
