BCAA BATTLES POLLUTION

The British Columbia Automobile Association wants motorists to help combat global warming and automobile pollution. The organization launched a newspaper campaign in the province to encourage motorists to write the Prime Minister of Canada, asking him to put stricter corporate average fuel consumption standards on new vehicles in Canada. In addition, the campaign will use pre-addressed response cards which are being mailed to BCAA members with renewal notices, an editorial in the organization's member magazine and a brochure which offers tips on how to drive, buy and maintain cars in a more environmentally responsible way. The campaign was created in-house. According to the BCAA, the federal government passed legislation in 1981 that requires car manufacturers to meet fuel efficiency standards. However, the legislation has never been proclaimed.
