WPP REPORTS RISE IN REVENUES

The WPP Group plc of London has reported an 8% jump in revenues to $1,485.0 million(US) for the six month period ending June 30. Gross profits rose almost 10% to $1,270 million. Operating profit was up over 19% to $171.1 million, compared to $141.8 million during the same period last year. North American agencies have shown the strongest growth with a 43% jump in revenues. The United Kingdom came in second with a 21% increase in revenues, while Continental Europe rounded out the top three with a 19% rise. Net new business billings for WPP were $1.3 billion. WPP Group is the parent company of such agencies as Ogilvy & Mather, J. Walter Thompson, Millward Brown and Hill & Knowlton.
