WINDOWS 98 RELEASE DATE STILL SET FOR JUNE
By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based Microsoft Corp. says it still plans to launch its Windows 98 operating system next month even though it is currently in discussions with the U.S. Justice Department. The software giant is under fire as the Justice Department accuses the company of abusing its dominant position as supplier of the operating systems on more than 90% of personal computers. The government says Microsoft is trying to drive other software makers from the market. Microsoft has agreed to meet with the Justice Department to work out a negotiated settlement. Microsoft planned to release the operating system to computer makers last week in order to give the computer makers time to load it on to machines for the planned worldwide retail launch next month. The company agreed to delay the release until this week. Canadian advertising for Microsoft is created by Communiqué, while PR is done by Hill & Knowlton, both of Toronto.
