IBM LEADS THE WAY IN FOURTH QUARTER

IBM Canada of Markham, Ont. was the number one notebook seller for the fourth quarter of 1997, according to figures from International Data Corp. of Toronto. For the quarter, IBM took 23.1% of the Canadian notebook market, outperforming Toshiba of Canada, which had a 20.3% share. However, Toshiba was still number one in notebook sales for the entire year, with a 24.1% market share. IBM had 20.3%. IBM unseated Compaq Canada as the leader in total computer sales for the quarter, but the boost wasn't enough to keep Compaq out of the lead for the entire year. IBM had a 17.3% share of the total market, including servers, notebooks and desktop computers, for the quarter. For the year, Compaq took 17% of the total market, while IBM took 16%. Dell Canada had 7.4%.
