CANADIAN CLOTHING GETTING BIG IN U.S.

Canadian clothing is making a splash in the U.S., according to the Canadian Apparel Foundation. Canadian clothing manufacturers want to do more business in the U.S. and the U.S. buyers are paying attention, with exports south of the border approaching $1 billion. For U.S. buyers their dollar gets them about 40% more in Canada. The CAF is participating in the clothing industry trade show, called MAGIC Show, in Las Vegas this week. The federation will distribute information on Canadian suppliers and promote the Canadian rag trade. CAF will be giving out details and directories on over 1,000 suppliers. In addition, it has also launched a 1-800 number for U.S. and Canadian buyers looking for information on Canadian suppliers. Separately, the Apparel Manufacturers Marketing Association of Ontario is holding a seminar on Sept. 14 in Toronto. Called the Status Report on the Canadian Clothing Market, it will have as guest speakers Randy Harris of Kormos Harris & Associates and James Durran of Marleau Lemire Securities. Harris, whose company does consumer surveys to track clothing sales in Canada, will discuss emerging trends in the market based on sales during the first half of 1995. Financial analyst Durran will talk about the apparel industry from an investment perspective.
