SEARCH ENGINE ENTERS CANADA

Telus Corp. of Edmonton has teamed up with U.S.-based AltaVista Search Service to launch a Canadian Internet search engine. Called AltaVista Canada, the search engine gives Internet users access to more than ten million pages of Canadian Web content. In addition, AltaVista Canada will offer national access to local Canadian information and a fully bilingual search functionality. The search engine became available in Canada earlier this month. Telus Corp. licensed the brand and the technology from AltaVista Search Service to develop the Canadian search engine. AltaVista Canada will be promoted on the home pages of about 600 Internet service providers. In addition, Telus plans to launch an ad campaign at a future date that will use the Internet as well as traditional media. Advertising plans are still being worked out, but it may use U.S. creative that will be adapted for the Canadian market. Margaret Kool Marketing of Edmonton handles advertising for Telus.
