CANWEST EARNINGS JUMP

Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communications has reported a 6% increase in net earnings, rising to $24.5 million in the fourth quarter ending Aug. 31. Net earnings during the fourth quarter a year earlier were $23.1 million Revenue jumped 44% to $203.2 million, compared to $140.8 million a year earlier. For the year, CanWest showed a 34% increase in net earnings to $141.9 million. Revenue was up 33% to $835.1 million. In 1996, net earnings were $105.6 million and revenue was $325.2 million. CanWest says an increased interest in international operations and strong advertising sales were behind the results.
