COMPAQ LEADS THE WAY IN COMPUTER SALES

Compaq Canada of Richmond Hill, Ont. is solidly in first place in the personal computer market. The company has 18.9% of the consumer and corporate markets for PCs during the third quarter of the year, up from 14.7% in the second quarter, according to International Data Corp. IBM Canada follows with a 16.3% share. Much of Compaq's lead is due to consumer sales, especially in its Presario line of machines. In sales of corporate PCs, Compaq and IBM are almost neck and neck, with IBM having 24.6% of the market and Compaq having 22.6%. Dell Canada is behind IBM with 6.9% of the consumer market, followed by Apple Canada with 6%. In terms of notebook computers, Toshiba of Canada leads the way with a 31% market share. IBM is second with 20.4% and Compaq is third with 15.2%.
