TEA CONSUMPTION ON THE RISE

Hot tea sales grew 6% in the 53-week period ending August 1997, according to ACNielsen of Markham, Ont. Traditional black teas are still the most popular among Canadians, but people are also branching out, trying new flavors and varieties. Environics research shows that 19% of the respondents are attracted to the soothing and relaxing benefits of a cup of hot tea. Twenty-four per cent are attracted to the product's convenience and good value, while another 24% like the variety of teas available and are likely to experiment with new types and flavors of teas. The studies were commissioned by The Tea Council of Canada, a non-profit association of companies and countries including Sri Lanka, Kenya and India, promoting tea to Canadians.
