CANWEST MOVES INTO SPECIALTY SERVICE
By Adnews Staff
Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communications will launch its specialty TV channel on Oct. 17. Called Prime TV, the station is a 24-hour channel targeted to adults, carrying dramatic entertainment and news programming. News programming includes 60 Minutes More, which will feature such guests as Salman Rushdie and Billy Wilder. There will also be an enhanced version of Global TV's National with anchor and journalist Peter Kent. A daily half-hour talk show called Grumps will allow Canadians to voice their opinions no matter how politically incorrect they may be. Emmy Award-winning shows such as Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, LA Law, Murder, She Wrote and Quantum Leap will be shown on Prime, as well as celebrity biographies and mini-series. Other shows include We're in Business, Taste of Life and Bon Voyage. Initially, CanWest will just promote the channel on-air. Next year, it will launch an ad campaign for Prime. Advertising for Prime will be handled in-house. Cable operators airing the station include Rogers Cablesystems, Shaw Communications, Moffat Communications and Cogeco Cable.
