IBM ADDS TO TWO CONSUMER LINES

IBM Canada of Markham, Ont. is gearing up for the back-to-school buying season. The computer maker added six new machines to its Aptiva E series of computers and six new computers to its Ambra Ispirati family. The machines target value-conscious consumers, with prices starting at just over $1,200. Enhancements to IBM's Aptiva E series include up to 40 megabytes of RAM, up to 4.3 gigabytes of hard drive space, 3D graphics capabilities, up to 24X variable speed CD-ROMs and 56KB modems. The new Ambra Ispirati models include Internet access software and 100 hours of service for $99 a month with no money down. The new machines are being promoted using print ads created by Ogilvy & Mather of Toronto. In addition, IBM lowered the prices on its Thinkpad models of notebook computers by up to 25% earlier this week.
