BUENOS AIRES GETS TOUGH ON CITY BILLBOARDS

The municipal government is cracking down on city billboards in Buenos Aires after a local citizens' group complained in April that illegally placed ads were distracting drivers and causing visual pollution. At least 100 billboards have been removed for various reasons incuding creating shadows on the pavement and being located too close to street level. Some have been removed because they were too shiny and were distracting airplane pilots landing at the city airport. Advertising agencies who created the ads will be fined and responsible for the cost of removing the billboards. If the agency cannot be located, the advertiser will be fined.
