SALES AND MARKETING JOBS ON THE RISE

Sales and marketing and information technology jobs will be hot job markets over the coming year, according to a study conducted by the Angus Reid Group of Toronto. Sixty-five per cent of the respondents said they plan to hire for their sales and marketing departments in 1997, while 60% said they will expand their information technology payrolls. Only 2% of the companies plan to cut staff in these areas. Of the six categories identified, only one was going to see significant staff reductions - administration. The other categories studied were finance, technology, operations, sales and marketing and human resources. Most companies said in-house training is essential for new employees, with 71% agreeing that today's employees need more on-the-job training than in the past. The survey was done for Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group of Toronto. It canvassed the views of 52 CEOs whose companies employee 350,000 people, generate $90 billion in sales and hold $110 billion in Canadian assets.
