HEALTH CANADA CHANGES RULES ON NO-FAT CLAIMS

Health Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have made it easier for Canadian companies to call their low-fat food fat-free. Until now, food products had to have less than .1 gram of fat per 100 gram serving before they could be called fat-free, but this has now been changed to .5 grams of fat per serving. According to the Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada, its was virtually impossible to make food with .1 gram of fat tasty to Canadians. The association also believes that Canadians will have a wider variety of food choices that contribute to a healthier diet because of the change. The move also got approval from groups such as the Dietitians of Canada, the National Institute of Nutrition, as well as nutrition experts from the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto
