CANADA MAY ALLOW HEALTH CLAIMS ON PRODUCTS
By Adnews Staff
Health Canada may eventually allow health claims on food products. Currently, under the Food and Drugs Act and Regulatons, as soon as you link a food to a disease the product is no longer considered a food, it is considered a drug. This is why health claims are not permitted in Canada. Health claims weren't defined in food and drug acts, which were written in the 1920s. Last month, Health Canada held a workshop to look at the role of health claims here. The organization is putting together a report to work towards developing a policy paper that will be released in the fall. This will develop into a draft on where the organization will go from there.
